Founded in 1819, Shelby County was named after Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky. The county seat, Sidney, became an important stop along the Miami and Erie Canal, helping the county develop into a manufacturing and agricultural hub. Sidney remains known for its architectural heritage, including buildings designed by Louis Sullivan.
