Founded in 1804, Muskingum County takes its name from a Native American word meaning “a town by the river”. The county seat, Zanesville, was Ohio’s state capital from 1810 to 1812. It became an important hub for pottery, glassware, and canal transportation, with the Muskingum River Navigation System boosting commerce.
