Established in 1820, Marion County was named after Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War general known as the “Swamp Fox.” The city of Marion became an industrial center, especially with the Marion Steam Shovel Company, which played a role in the construction of the Panama Canal. President Warren G. Harding was born here.
