Established in 1820, Sandusky County was named after the Sandusky River, which has a Native American origin meaning “cold water”. The county seat, Fremont, was home to President Rutherford B. Hayes, whose estate, Spiegel Grove, remains a historic site. Sandusky County was an important agricultural and Underground Railroad hub.
