Ross County

Did You Know?

Founded in 1798, Ross County was one of Ohio’s earliest counties and was named after James Ross, a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. The county seat, Chillicothe, was Ohio’s first state capital from 1803 to 1810 and again from 1812 to 1816. The area was historically significant to the Hopewell culture, with elaborate Native American earthworks, including those at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.
