Created in 1824, Lorain County was an early center for steel production, shipbuilding, and automobile manufacturing. The city of Lorain, along Lake Erie, became home to large immigrant populations, including Hungarians, Slovenians, and Italians, who worked in local industries. Oberlin College, founded in 1833, played a significant role in abolitionist movements.
