Founded in 1803, Franklin County was named for Benjamin Franklin. Columbus, Ohio’s capital and largest city, became the county seat and grew into a major center for government, industry, and education. The development of Ohio State University (1870) and the rise of banking, insurance, and technology have shaped its economy.
