Created in 1838, Erie County was named after Lake Erie and the Erie people who originally inhabited the region. The county seat, Sandusky, became a major hub for Great Lakes shipping and tourism, with Cedar Point, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, being a major attraction. Sandusky was also significant in the Underground Railroad.
