Founded in 1818, Clark County was named after General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero. The county seat, Springfield, became a manufacturing powerhouse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in automobiles and farm equipment production. The National Road, which passed through Springfield, helped boost economic growth, making the city a transportation and commercial hub.
