Established in 1805, Champaign County’s name comes from the French word for “open plain.” Urbana, the county seat, was a center for military training during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The county also played a role in early aviation history, with Grimes Field serving as a training ground for pilots. Agriculture remains the county’s backbone.
