Created in 1803, Butler County was named after General Richard Butler, who died in the Northwest Indian War. The county’s industrial and economic growth was largely driven by Hamilton, a major manufacturing center. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Butler County became a hub for steel production and paper manufacturing. Miami University, founded in 1809, further influenced the region’s educational and cultural development.
