Founded in 1818, Brown County was named after Major General Jacob Brown, a hero of the War of 1812. It became famous for its role in the Underground Railroad, with abolitionist John Rankin operating a station in Ripley. The county also played a role in early American whiskey production, and today, agriculture remains a significant part of its economy.
