Founded in 1805, Athens County is home to Ohio University, established in 1804 as the state’s first university. The area was originally settled by Revolutionary War veterans. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Athens thrived on coal mining and brick production. However, with the decline of coal, the county shifted toward education and tourism, drawing visitors for its rich Appalachian culture and scenic landscapes.
