Bramley House in Independence, Ohio

Built in 1856 (as the sign says) and on the National Register of Historic Places, the home was constructed by Jasper Fuller, and is sometimes known as the Fuller-Bramley house for that reason. However, the Fuller family only lived in the sandstone block home for six years.

In 1861, Matthew and Sarah Bramley purchased the home from the Fullers and moved in with some of their ten children. (According to the 1850 census, 3 of their children at the time were over the age of 18.) Over the following decades, four generations of the Bramley family lived there, ending with Betsey Bramley, who left the house to the Independence Historical Society upon her death in 1996.

Over the years, an addition was constructed on the back of house, which now consists of a kitchen and a garage/storage area.

In 2012, the building opened as a historic house museum, featuring period items and plenty of photographs of the Bramley family. There’s even a quilt on one wall, hung above the staircase, that was made by B. J. Fortlage and Kathy Woolard of the Independence Historical Society from clothing once owned and worn by the Bramleys.

The first floor of the house consists of the kitchen, a dining room, a well-appointed living room, and a bathroom. Sprinkled around the space are photos of the many generations of the Bramley family that lived in the home.

The second floor consists of bedrooms, another bathroom, and a doll room.

The Bramley House is available for hosting small parties and gatherings. For rates and additional information, please contact the Independence Historical Society.
